Becoming an Author (Grades 1 & 2)

BECOMING AN AUTHOR OF AN ORIGINAL LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD STORY

Children in first and second grades have read about many versions of the popular fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood throughout their childhoods.  Now it’s my students' opportunity to create a new, original adventure for Little Red. This is called a fractured fairy tale. The only requirement for the story is that Little Red and the wolf need to be a part of the story, but the rest of the elements of the story will be new and exciting. At the end of this class, each student will take home an awesome pop-up  book that hopefully will be cherished for a long time. The children will also be making a small mural depicting the characters and setting for their original books. During the last class session, we will have an Author’s Tea and perform a Reader’s Theatre of a fractured version of this beloved character. Please sign up your child only if he/she is comfortable with writing and is a fluent, independent reader and writer. The children will be creating their own stories during class time. I will spend time editing each story with my students before the rewrite process begins. Students will be given all supplies needed to bring their imaginations to life. Please bring: Note for classroom teacher is required - stating your child is to go directly to the gym after school, snack to eat before each session and a water bottle. See course listing for other specific information.
